Gyokuro is made from tea leaves grown in fields covered for about 20 days from the time the new shoots begin to grow, shading them almost completely from sunlight.
It is known for its low astringency, rich umami, and a distinctive aroma called "ooika."

Gyokuro that has been finely ground with a mill or millstone is generally called powdered gyokuro or gyokuro tea powder.
Under Japan's green tea labelling rules, tea other than tencha that has been ground into powder is classified as "funmatsucha" (tea powder).

The main difference from matcha, which looks similar, lies in how the raw leaves are processed.
Matcha is made by grinding tencha: leaves grown under shade, steamed, and then dried without rolling.

Gyokuro, on the other hand, is steamed, rolled and then dried, in the same way as sencha.
Even though both are grown under shade, the different processing means they are treated as different kinds of tea.

Instant tea is made by concentrating and drying the components of brewed tea into powder or granules.
Its key feature is that it dissolves quickly in hot or cold water.

Tea powder, by contrast, is the whole tea leaf ground into powder.
So it never dissolves completely, and it is best to give it a stir as you drink.

1. Check the raw material
The product name and ingredients on the package tell you whether it is gyokuro, sencha or matcha.
Even among gyokuro, there are products made from the leaves and products made from the stems, such as shiraore.

2. Tea powder or instant tea?
Choose tea powder if you want to enjoy the whole leaf, or instant tea if you want something that dissolves instantly.

3. Choose the packaging to suit how much and where you use it
A bag is handy for generous everyday use, and individually wrapped sticks are convenient to carry.

Morioen's tea powder is made from our popular Yame Gyokuro Shiraore, ground into a fine powder in our own stone mill.
Shiraore is a stem tea, made from the stems of gyokuro.

Slow grinding by stone helps keep the tea's colour and aroma.
Like matcha, it can be used widely in baking and cooking, too.

At work: Stir one stick into a mug of hot water and you have a cup of tea, no teapot needed.
There are no used leaves, so it is easy even at your desk.

On the go: Simply add 1–2 sticks to a 500 ml bottle of water and shake well.
If you like it stronger, we recommend 2 sticks.
