Hello from Meicha no Sato Morioen, a Japanese tea shop in Shingu, Fukuoka.
As the weather turns colder, we all start to crave something warm.

This time we introduce chagayu, tea rice porridge, as a way to enjoy tea not only by drinking it but by eating it.
We will also introduce Morioen's new Genmai Chagayu Mi

Chagayu is rice porridge cooked with tea.
In Nara in particular, it is affectionately called "okaisan" and has long been a staple everyday dish.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture's regional cuisine guide, Nara's chagayu is made by cooking leftover rice in brewed hojicha, and is known for its light, runny texture.
It is so familiar that people say "mornings in Yamato begin with chagayu."

Its history is long; dishes resembling chagayu appear in the menus associated with the Omizutori ceremony at Todaiji Temple.
It is thought to have been eaten for 1,200 years or more.

People sometimes added sweet potato, pumpkin or chestnuts.
It is a gentle dish that each household has enjoyed in its own way.

In Nara, many households cooked rice in the evening, and chagayu is thought to have spread as a way to eat leftover rice warm.
A cotton tea bag called a "chanbukuro" has traditionally been used to brew the hojicha.

Today, you can also enjoy creative versions of chagayu at hotel breakfasts and restaurants across Nara.
This traditional everyday dish is still carefully passed down.

While Nara's chagayu is a brown porridge cooked with hojicha, Morioen's version uses green tea powder and is a vivid green.
Both are called chagayu, but they differ in both look and taste.

Morioen's Genmai Chagayu Mix blends brown rice with our stone-ground Yame Gyokuro Shiraore powder.
It makes a delicious chagayu with a pleasant, gentle bitterness.

Enjoy the crunchy texture of the brown rice and its vivid green colour.
The only ingredients are brown rice and green tea (from Koga and Yame, Fukuoka).

The great appeal of Genmai Chagayu Mix is that you simply pour hot water over it to make chagayu.
As you pour, the crunchy brown rice softens and turns into chagayu with a gentle aroma.

There is no need to cook rice in a pot, so you can easily prepare it on a cold morning or whenever you want a little something to eat.
Take a moment to relax with a steaming bowl.

Besides chagayu, the mix is also recommended as a topping for yogurt or vanilla ice cream.
The crunchy brown rice and the tea's gentle bitterness add a nice accent.

Pour milk over it and you can enjoy it like cereal, too.
The tea flavour and the sweetness of the milk combine into something like an "edible tea latte."

Warm chagayu on cold days, a topping for yogurt or ice cream on warmer days, and a cereal-style bowl with milk on busy mornings.
Find your own favourite ways to enjoy it, depending on your mood and the season.

Morioen's previous owner used to sprinkle stone-ground tea powder over rice, pour hot water on top, and eat it simply.
Sometimes with torn nori on top, sometimes just as it was.

This Genmai Chagayu Mix was inspired by that way of eating.
We hope it helps you more easily enjoy eating tea, a custom long cherished in Japan, as in ochazuke and chagayu.
